The Heart Jacket

Introducing “The Heart Jacket”

I was inspired to design this jacket for people who need to wear heart monitors long term. I was diagnosed with a heart condition at a very young age and I had a lot of trouble finding clothes that worked with my monitor. Some problems I had while wearing the monitor were itching and discomfort from the leads, becoming overheated from the clothes I wore, getting the cords tangled in my clothing, the pockets in my clothes being too small to hold the monitor, and most importantly, feeling really embarrassed because it was hard to hide. This inspired me to create a garment that could solve some of those problems. Some adaptive elements of this jacket include:

-Breathable materials only (100% cotton shell, mesh trim, and 100% silk lining)

-Zippers in the sleeves that act as a vent that can be opened to help cool the customer down

-An opening in the center for the monitor and cords to fit through to help prevent tangling and also allow them to rest in the front pocket

-A hidden pocket in the inside to help conceal the monitor if the customer chooses to do so

-Two separate zippers on the top and bottom pieces to allow the customer to adjust certain parts of the monitor while still holding everything else in place

Multifunctional Jacket and Dress

  • The Fashion Institute of Technology's AAS Exhibition 2021

    I made this multi-functional jacket and dress for my term garment and it was chosen to be displayed at the AAS exhibit at The Fashion Institute of Technology.

  • Front and Back Views

    While this jacket and dress can be worn normally there are also some features that makes it multifunctional. The jacket has a removable bag and the dress has a turtleneck that can be flipped up and worn like a face mask.

  • How To Remove The Bag

    The jacket includes a bag that can be hidden inside and worn multiple ways. This was inspired by my own experiences with having a chronic illness and never having enough room to carry things like medication and other essentials.

I created this collection for my Visual Design Capstone Course. I chose three medical conditions/disabilities and created adaptive clothes to solve some of the clothing related problems that people with these conditions face. Having dealt with my own health struggles where I had to wear heart monitors regularly, this project is something that means so much to me. This is just the beginning and I am so excited to continue to create clothes that help people facing health related of obstacles.
